Who doesn’t love meatballs? They’re so versatile and delicious. Fortunately for those of us with food allergy families, gluten free meatballs are also very easy to make!

Of course, you can serve them with spaghetti or sweet and sour sauce, but our favorite way to eat them is in easy homemade barbecue sauceand served over rice. So good! Add a green salad or steamed broccoli, and you have a meal.

I’ll tell you a little secret that I’ve learned through trial and error: meatballs aren’t picky. So, say you’re allergic to eggs; Add a few tablespoons of milk instead, or if you’re allergic to dairy too, simply leave them out altogether. In that case, though, you’ll want to add some oil or lard in order to keep your finished meatballs from being too dry.

Along that same vein, most meatball recipes call for breadcrumbs, which is why, as a person adhering to a gluten-free diet, you can’t just eat the meatballs served at your church potluck. Been there, done that, regretted it. But since meatball recipes aren’t picky at all, using gluten-free substitutions is easy!

If you happen to have gluten-free breadcrumbs, that’s great! But when I don’t, I just use rice flour along with gluten-free oatmeal. I know that not all celiacs can handle oatmeal, and if you can’t, I highly recommend using gluten-free bread crumbs instead. However, you can substitute rice flour, flaked quinoa,or another choice of grain/flour as you choose. Your meat will form into a ball regardless of what you use, so just make sure it tastes good.

FAQs

What is a gluten-free substitute for breadcrumbs in meatballs? ›

Rolled oats are the perfect gluten-free binding ingredient, replacing breadcrumbs in meatballs or meatloaf and many more recipes when you need to bind meat and eggs. Rolled oats are best not used as a coating agent as they tend to go soggy.

What is a binder for meatballs instead of breadcrumbs? ›

Rolled Oats

Oats are the perfect substitutes for breadcrumbs in meatballs or meatloaf.

What can I use to bind instead of breadcrumbs? ›

Crackers are a good choice for fillings like meatballs or burgers because they absorb liquids and bind the same way breadcrumbs do. Grab a sleeve of crackers and crush them in a bag with a rolling pin or pulse until finely ground in a food processor.

What binds meatballs together? ›

Egg: A lot of meatball recipes add egg to the mince mixture because it helps to bind the balls together. Breadcrumbs: Breadcrumbs also help to bind your meatballs. If the mince mixture is quite wet, breadcrumbs will help soak up excess moisture so that the balls don't fall apart.

Is it better to use milk or water in meatballs? ›

Milk: We will mix a bit of milk with the breadcrumbs to form a panade, which will help to keep our meatballs nice and moist. Ground beef and pork: I like to use a 50/50 mix of the two to make meatballs, but you can also make all-beef or all-pork meatballs if you prefer.

What is a low Fodmap substitute for breadcrumbs? ›

Instead of breadcrumbs, try corn flake crumbs or brown rice crumbs. Instead of wheat crackers, try rice crackers. Instead of pasta sauce (usually with garlic and onions), try FODY Marina. Instead of sugar snap peas, try green beans.

Can I use gluten-free flour instead of breadcrumbs? ›

Yes, you can use almond flour as a gluten-free alternative to bread crumbs. However, remember that they will not give the same crispy texture as bread crumbs.
