Why are libraries getting rid of OverDrive? ›

Discontinuing the OverDrive app allows our development teams to focus their efforts on Libby. We also want to make it as easy a possible to promote your digital library to your users. Having one app simplifies how you train your users, answer questions, and stay up to date with changes.

It was discontinued at the end of April 2023. OverDrive's 2nd generation and only app to use is called Libby. Can I still use the OverDrive website? Yes, you can continue to browse, borrow, and enjoy titles from the library's OverDrive website.

Upgrade to Libby. On May 1, 2023, the OverDrive app was discontinued. We encourage you to make the switch to Libby, our newer reading app. Libby is made by the same people, with the same goal of connecting you to your library and to your favorite books, audiobooks, and magazines.

Libby is built by OverDrive, who also developed the legacy OverDrive app. Libby features the same free digital content from your library that you may have enjoyed in the OverDrive app. However, Libby was designed to make finding, borrowing, and enjoying free digital titles easier than ever.

Which app should I use? If you use one iOS or Android device to browse, download, and read or listen to digital books, we recommend trying Libby. It's a great one-device experience. If you like to read books on many devices, or prefer to browse for new titles on your computer, stick with the OverDrive app for now.

For patrons who use the legacy OverDrive app on their desktop computer to download eAudiobooks and transfer them to MP3 players; this software will remain for those who have already downloaded it and are using it.

Yes, your current loans and holds from the OverDrive app will be added to Libby as soon as you add your library card. Note: Reading progress and bookmarks from the OverDrive app won't sync to Libby when you switch.

Hoopla is very similar to the library reader app Libby by Overdrive, which allows users to borrow ebooks and audiobooks. For some users, Hoopla can feel like a step-up from Libby.

OverDrive is the exclusive provider of Kindle-compatible ebooks to public libraries in the U.S. Your patrons can easily search for and borrow Kindle Books through the Libby app or your library's OverDrive website. With a few easy steps, patrons can enjoy borrowed ebooks on their favorite Kindle ereader.

With Libby you can borrow 10 things at a time, and you can place holds on 10 things. You can choose to borrow items for 7 or 14 days. With hoopla, you can borrow a maximum of 10 things each month. hoopla also offers BingePasses, which are collections of items on a theme that count as a single borrow.

The overdrive setting alter the voltage used to drive the pixels, but all of the voltages are within specification of the panel. It appears the only downside is turning the setting too high can cause overshoot leading to ghosting.

Now, this longtime digital reading companion will be shutting down for good. After announcing its plans to sunset the app and removing it from app stores last year, the company now says that OverDrive will fully shut down on May 1, 2023.
